Why You Should Continue Supplementation

Posted by EyePromise on Sep 19th 2024

The two most well-known studies in eyecare are the AREDS and AREDS 2 trials. The researchers established eye vitamins as an effective solution for patients suffering from age-related eye health issues. While these studies were groundbreaking at the time, the long-term impact of supplementation was mostly unknown; until now.

What Did They Research?

Researchers followed up with participants from both trials to see what benefits, if any, long-term supplementation had. They reviewed each participant’s retinal scans from the trials, specifically participants with atrophic age-related eye health issues. They then calculated the position and expansion rate of each participants’ atrophic regions to understand progression of their age-related eye health issues and the impact their supplement regimen had.

What Did They Find?

While those who had already developed atrophic regions in their central vision saw less improvements with supplementation, participants whose atrophic regions were peripheral improved their outcomes by 55% over 3 years.

What Does This Mean for You?

Previously, therapeutic options for patients with late-stage age-related eye health issues were slim. Now, supplementation has been demonstrated as a simple solution with real results. Tiarnan Keenan, M.D., Ph.D., researcher for the National Eye Institute (NEI) and lead author of the study, explained,

“Our high acuity central vision is essential for tasks like reading and driving…antioxidant supplementation is a simple step that may slow central vision loss, even [for patients in the late-stage age-related eye health issues].”

Considering most people with age-related eye health issues develop atrophy peripherally first, these results have opened an avenue of hope for patients with later-stage age-related eye health issues.
