Managing Blood Sugar: A Walk In the Park?

Posted by EyePromise on Jun 25th 2024

Life can often get in the way of our plans, especially when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle. For those who need to control their blood sugar, it often adds to the complexity of daily life. However, there are a few simple things you can add to your daily routine that can help you manage blood sugar levels.

Take a Walk.

It turns out that managing your blood sugar could actually be easier than a walk in the park! Recent research shows that taking a brief 2–5-minute walk after eating can reduce your blood sugar by 30-35%, and these results can occur within minutes. These results are thanks to your muscles, as they need energy when they’re working during physical activity (i.e., walking). Glucose is converted into energy for the muscles, and it’s taken from the blood to create that energy. Hence, reducing your levels of glucose, or sugar, in the blood.

Drink More Water.

This is a great suggestion for overall health, and it helps with managing blood sugar levels, too. Drinking healthy amounts of water throughout the day rehydrates the blood, defusing the blood sugar levels. Like nutrition, the amount of water you should drink a day is based on you and your lifestyle. Here’s a helpful formula to determine how much water you should intake every day:

(Your body weight ÷ 2) + 12oz for every 30 minutes of exercise = Goal water intake in ounces

An important note here is that your water shouldn’t have added sugar in it. Beverages like sweetened iced tea, lemonade, and even sparkling water can be viewed as comparable to water. However, the extra sugar in those drinks won’t help you manage blood sugar levels and can even make them worse. Therefore, it’s recommended to avoid these sugary drinks and stick with good old-fashioned water.

Add In Strength/Resistance Training.

Once you’ve added the above into your routine and have grown comfortable with them, consider adding strength or resistance training to the mix. As mentioned, muscles need energy to function, and the more muscles you have, the more energy they require. So, when you build muscle via strength/resistance training, they require more glucose to burn for energy. When more glucose is taken by the muscles, there’s less left in the blood. While the results are less instantaneous than the above suggestions, the benefits are much longer lasting.
