IN THE NEWS: EyePromise® Partner Emphasizes Ocular Nutrition

Posted by EyePromise on Apr 25th 2024

As a true practice partner, EyePromise looks for any chance to elevate our partners and their practices. So, when we heard that one of our partners was being featured in the local news, we couldn’t wait to share! Dr. Dirk Massie, a local partner from Performance Eyecare, embraced this opportunity for education to share the importance of proactive protection for lasting vision.

As Seen On TV

Dr. Massie joined Fox 2 News’s Stephanie Knight on her segment called Ask the Expert. Designed to bring expert advice to the masses, Stephanie brought Dr. Massie on to discuss the most common reasons for visual impairment and how to proactively protect your patients’ eyes. Dr. Massie explained that the three most common sources of vision loss are:

  1. Blood sugar control issues
  2. Cataracts
  3. Age-related eye health issues

Though each reason is concerning in its own way, Dr. Massie’s recommendations can apply universally.

Recommendation One: Regular Eye Exams

Early detection is the most powerful tool for protecting vision. The earlier an issue or risk is identified, the better you can work with your patients to mitigate it. Often, there are structural changes before there are noticeable visual changes, and annual eye exams that include imagery are crucial for identifying these changes before they can damage vision. One fast, easy, and reliable technique for early detection is macular pigment optical density (MPOD) measurement.

Recommendation Two: Sun Protection

This recommendation couldn’t be timelier! As summer approaches, protecting your patients’ eyes starts with recommending the right protection from the sun. Like skin, the eyes suffer cumulative damage with long-term sun exposure. Wearing hats, visors, etc. can help keep the sun from reaching the eyes directly, but patients should combine hats with a good pair of sunglasses equipped with full spectrum UV protection.

Recommendation Three: Nutrition

As well as external protection, patients can improve their internal sun protection. Dr. Massie’s final recommendation was to fortify your patients’ eyes’ natural protective layer called the macular pigment. The two crucial carotenoids needed to support this internal protection, zeaxanthin and lutein, are notoriously difficult to get through diet alone. That’s why many eye care professionals recommend nutraceuticals to help supplement this nutritional gap. Dr. Massie prescribes EyePromise.

EyePromise is the #1 eye health nutraceutical choice of eye care professionals and professional athletes. Our comprehensive clinically backed line of nutritional products supports a number of patient needs, including blood sugar control issuesage-related eye health issues, and ocular surface support before and after cataract surgery.
