Ultimately, it’s a movement that empowers patients to do their own research to help them make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing. It also fosters the growth of supportive communities where patients can find reassurance, support, and validation as well as help one another understand, cope with, and manage common health issues.

What This Means for Eye Care Professionals

This movement means that patients can come to the exam with prepared questions and preconceptions, which can lead some to feel like their expertise is in question. However, we recommend the following steps to stay ahead

• Learn to utilize social media. Whether you post about common eye health issues or just stay current with the trending content, using social media to your advantage is a great way to maintain relevance with patients.
• Understand what information (and misinformation) is out there. This can be staying on of top social media, checking Google for common searches, or even using listening tools to track trends.
• Figure out how to speak their language. One of the reasons patients turn to social media is because information is shortened, simplified, and explained in layman’s terms. Mastering this form of communication while maintaining clinical accuracy is a great way to help your patients understand complex eye health issues.
