World Sight Day 2023
Posted by EyePromise on Oct 12th 2023
As you may know, EyePromise® has a vision: to help people live life to its potential by providing science-based nutritional support for healthy vision while making a positive impact on our world. One of the ways we can live our vision is by working with charitable organizations, one of which is Optometry Giving Sight. In fact, today is World Sight Day. Here’s what Optometry Giving Sight does, what World Sight Day is, and how you (and we) can get involved.
Who Is Optometry Giving Sight?
Optometry Giving Sight (OGS) began in 2003 through an initiative backed by the World Council of Optometry, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and the Brien Holden Vision Institute. Together, they hoped this program would help bring global focus to the growing vision impairment issue plaguing many around the world.
OGS’s vision requires support from the optometry industry, optometry professionals, patients, and donors. That vision is “A world in which optometry enables universal access to vision care and eye health.” To achieve this, OGS supports programs that deliver vision care, train eye care professionals, and build infrastructure in developing countries. This includes establishing optometry schools, optical labs, and vision centers that provide low or no-cost exams and refraction correction.
“sustainable and scalable optometry-led programs that educate eye care providers locally and enable the establishment and delivery of vision care and eye health to all.”
What Is World Sight Day?
There are over 1 billion people all around the world who lack access to basic, life-changing eye care. This is why OGS works to bring the gift of sight and eye health to all through sustainable and scalable optometry-led programs. To raise awareness and funds for this growing need, OGS established World Sight Day – an annual day supported by eye health organizations around the world.
What Is the World Sight Day Challenge?
Each year, OGS champions a fall fundraising campaign to help support the projects and policies that further benefit their vision and mission. This campaign takes form as an annual challenge. Known as the World Sight Day Challenge, the 2023 Challenge theme is “Giving Together, Seeing Forever.” This theme helps celebrate the power of the eye care industry to provide the gift of sight to those who need it most.
How to Get Involved
New to this year’s Challenge, OGS is offering the use of the Charity Miles app, turning your walked/run/biked miles into charity. The app keeps track of every step, and users are encouraged to create and share fundraising pages to let friends, family, and followers know they are raising money. Practices and companies can also build teams and set goals for their employees/staff to meet through logged miles. The app displays and keeps track of your or your team’s progress, helping to keep everyone informed and motivated.
So, what are you waiting for? Sign up to start helping OGS bring life-changing eye care to every corner of the world!
