Why Supplementation Is Important

Posted by amess on Dec 3rd 2020

At this point, we likely know that nutrition is important for all aspects of our health, including eye health. That’s why brightly colored fruits and vegetables, fish, and leafy greens are foods we should try to incorporate into what we eat every day. But how much would we need to eat to get what our eyes really need from our food?

Zeaxanthin

Zeaxanthin, a critical antioxidant for protecting and nourishing our central vision, can be found in foods like orange bell peppers, paprika peppers, and corn plus some leafy greens like spinach, kale, and broccoli. However, to keep your eyes functioning at their best, you’d need to ingest at least 8 milligrams of zeaxanthin a day. To put that into perspective, that means you would need to eat 20 ears of corn every day! That’s 140 ears of corn a week!

Lutein

Lutein is another critical nutrient for our eyes. This specific antioxidant helps protect our peripheral and color vision. Found in leafy greens like broccoli, kale, and spinach, lutein is 5 times more common in the diet than zeaxanthin. However, you’d still need to eat at least 1 cup of cooked kale, 1 cup of cooked spinach, or 3 cups of cooked broccoli every day to really support your body’s need for lutein.

Omega-3s

Omega-3s are fatty acids found in fish oil and some types of nuts. These fatty acids are extremely beneficial for health, supporting brain function, heart health, and, of course, eye health. Eating fish like salmon, anchovies, and white pollock every day can help increase your fatty acid intake, but it’s difficult to know if you’re getting the amounts of Omega-3s your eyes desperately need to keep them feeling fresh and comfortable.

A Simple Solution

Adding up all the things you need to eat every day will eventually take a toll on your stomach and your grocery bill. But there is a simpler way to get all the nutrients you need to protect and support your eyes: supplementation. Taking vitamins made specifically for your eyes ensures the ingredients included will support your vision and keep you seeing your best.

In a once-a-day softgel or chewable tablet, you can get enough zeaxanthin, lutein, and/or Omega-3s to boost your eyes and maintain your vision. In addition to these ingredients, some vitamins include other critical nutrients like the alphabet vitamins (A, B, C, D, E), CoQ10, and evening primrose oil to support your eye and overall health. Even better, most vitamins that are made specifically for your eyes can be taken alongside a multi-vitamin.

Eating for your eyes can seem like a daunting task, but it all becomes achievable with the right eye vitamin. Find out which EyePromise® vitamin is right for you!
