Color Vision: What Is It & Why Does It Matter?

Posted by EyePromise on Jun 3rd 2021

When it comes to having good vision, many people think about the acuity score we get from eye exams with an eye chart. But life is more than black and white, it’s shades of gray and, more pronouncedly, it’s wonderful hues of colorful scenery that enrich your perspective. In this post, we’ll explain what exactly color vision is and why it’s more important to your vision than just pretty pictures.

What Is Color Vision?

According to EyePromise Scientific Advisory Board member and eye care professional Dr. Pinakin Davey, the technical definition is,

“Color vision is the ability to make the discrimination based on the wavelength composition of the light independent of its intensity.”

In other words, it’s your eyes’ ability to see an object, regardless of how bright or dim the lighting is, and identify what color it is. Color is one of the things that makes life interesting; however, some people have a hard time seeing colors.

Those who can’t identify the differences between certain colors are referred to as “color blind.” The most common type of color blindness is reds and greens. Sometimes, blues and purples can be mistaken, too. Additionally, there are some eye health issues that can impact color vision. For example, unconrolled blood sugar can lessen the perception of colors, making them look less vibrant and saturated.

Why Does Color Vision Matter?

Color vision is more important than just being able to see the colors of a sunset clearly. While it definitely helps improve the quality of life, it’s also important for maintaining safety. For example, many warning signs are red, but if you’re red/green colorblind, you may not be able to see the flag at the beach warning swimmers of dangerous waters. Another example is stoplights. While the position of each light is also an indicator, it may be difficult to determine what position was lit while traveling at high rates of speed.

How to Improve Color Vision

Like other visual functions, there are glasses that can be purchased to correct color vision. However, these corrective lenses are often expensive, and you would need to remember to wear them constantly. There is another way to enhance color vision.

Eye Vitamins

Eye vitamins can be a great solution for improving color vision! Specifically, two nutrients called zeaxanthin and lutein help protect the retina and heighten the eye’s natural ability to see. To get the best outcomes, you’ll need to increase your daily intake of dietary zeaxanthin to 8 mg or more and lutein to 4 mg or more. That’s where supplements can help.

EyePromise eye vitamins are the only products available with this level of dietary zeaxanthin, the critical antioxidant chosen by the eye to protect and enhance central vision. Additionally, EyePromise has a vitamin specifically designed to support eye health in people with blood glucose control issues, and it’s been proven to enhance color vision in a clinical trial!

While EyePromise has a comprehensive line of effective eye health vitamins, it can be difficult to know for sure which product is right for you. And to that, we say, “Let our experts tell you!” Take the quiz to find out now!
