Is Your Vision Deteriorating?

As with many health issues, symptoms of deteriorating vision can occur without you taking much notice. However, paying attention to the differences in your vision can help you mitigate the effects of aging eyes.
3 key signs of degenerating vision:
- Distorted Lines– If straight lines appear distorted or wavy, you may be noticing signs of deteriorating vision. The macula could be affected, which is the part of your eye responsible for central vision where the eye’s acuity is sharpest.
- A Blind Spot- Often those with deteriorating vision notice that a blind spot develops, or an empty area in the center of their vision. As time goes on, a blurred area near the center of vision is a common symptom. Over time, the blurred area may grow larger or you may develop blank spots in your central vision. Objects may also not appear to be as bright as they used to be.
- Diminished Color– Colors may seem more dull, and contrast between colors will seem less noticeable. It may also become difficult to tell where an object ends and where its background begins, making it difficult to see curbs or steps.
While we all know we can't prevent ourselves from aging, it is possible to mitigate the progression of degenerative vision. Studies show that dietary zeaxanthin (a nutrient that helps protect and improve vision) increases low macular pigment levels – a leading risk factor for deteriorating vision.
