CE Course: Contact Lens Comfort
Posted by amess on Jul 25th 2019
Contact lens comfort is a multifaceted issue. From ocular surface health to the contact lens material, many factors can contribute to discomfort. For many patients, discomfort is the main reason they cease using contacts, and few mention their comfort issues until asked about their lens wear at their next eye exam. Eye care professionals need to understand the different catalysts for comfort issues and, more importantly, how to help.
CE Course for Solving Contact Lens Discomfort
To help his fellow eye care professionals solve this problem, Christopher Kuc, OD, shared a CE-credited activity with the Review of Cornea & Contact Lenses publication. This 1-hour, COPE-approved CE activity is designed to:
- Define the characteristics and implications of contact lens discomfort.
- Take a thorough history of the patient’s problem and general health status.
- Describe the modifiable and non-modifiable patient factors, as well as the ocular and external environmental factors, that may contribute to contact lens discomfort.
- Use a stepwise intervention strategy to attempt to ameliorate contact lens discomfort and to prevent decreased or discontinued contact lens wear.
You can take the course for credit on the Review of Cornea and Contact Lenses website.
One of the lesser-known ways to solve contact lens discomfort is through nutrition. Nutrition has a heavy impact on ocular surface health, which plays a big role in patients’ contact lens wear. Dr. Mile Brujic uses nutritional supplementation as one of the first methods of relief for his patients. He shared his experience with ocular nutrition and contact lens comfort.
