Allergy Season Is Here: 5 Ways to Find Relief From Itchy and Red Eyes

Eye allergies can be caused by multiple factors, but the outcome is almost always the same: it can make you miserable. If your eyes feel itchy and dry (or watery), you're not alone.
The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology estimates that 50 million people in the U.S. have seasonal allergies. Itchy, red eyes can make it difficult getting day-to-day things done, but there are ways to help!
- Take Out Your Contacts: The surface of contact lenses can attract airborne allergens such as mold, pet dander, dust, and pollen. These allergens can build up on the lenses. With this in mind, take out your contact lenses and wear glasses during peak allergy seasons. Another consideration may be using disposable contacts and removing them at the end of the day.
- Decongestants: These not only make it easier to breathe when you feel congested, but also reduce the size of blood vessels in the whites (sclera) of your eyes. This helps relieve the redness in the eye.
- Antihistamines: These reduce allergic reactions by blocking histamine cells in the body that can cause runny noses and itchy, watery eyes.
- Allergy Eye Drops: Eye drops don't permanently help relieve occasional dry eye symptoms, but they can help during peak allergy seasons by flushing out allergens.
- Use an Eye Vitamin: Helping relieve dry, itchy eyes from the inside sounds harder than it is. Taking a supplement with premium fish oil and other soothing ingredients can help both occasional dry eye and watery eyes.
