The 2024 Mitsubishi Electric Classic

Posted by EyePromise on May 1st 2024

The 2024 PGA TOUR Champions season is well underway, and just wrapping up this past weekend is a tournament called the Mitsubishi Electric Classic.

What began back in 2013 as the “Greater Gwinnett Championship” has grown into one of the premier stops on the PGA TOUR Champions. The tournament is played at TPC Sugarloaf Country Club in Duluth, GA, and has been since the beginning. The purse for the event was $1.8 million, but the real winners are the local charities the tournament raises money for through the Gwinnett Championship Foundation. Since its inception, the Mitsubishi Electric Classic has raised over $4.1 million.

Today’s Tournament

The 2024 Mitsubishi Electric Classic took place last weekend. The 54-hole stroke play tournament hosted 81 PGA TOUR Champion golfers and was once again held at the prestigious TPC Sugarloaf Country Club. With a total purse increase to $2 million, this year’s competition was sure to be an exciting one!

Results

Stephen Ames took home the trophy and $300K in earnings this past Sunday. After several rounds of tough competition and a rocky start, Ames rolled into the final round of golf confidently after sinking 8 birdies on Saturday. His Sunday was slow to start but heated up quickly after sinking an eagle from 82 yards.

The final stretch came down to three golfers who had already won a PGA TOUR Champions tournament once this season: Ames, Steven Alker, and Paul Broadhurst. Ames solidified his victory with another legendary eagle on the 13th hole and a birdie on his final hole, leaving him 4 shots over Broadhurst and Doug Barron.

With this win, Ames became the first PGA TOUR Champions golfer to win twice, earning another first place finish at the Chubb Classic. However, what makes this win unique for him is that he completed the final day of competition on his 60th birthday. Quite the gift for his milestone birthday!
