The 2024 BMW PGA Championship

Posted by EyePromise on Oct 2nd 2024

As we reach the later months of the golf season, we’re crossing the pond to talk about a legendary European tournament. Now called the BMW PGA Championship, this golf outing has made a name for itself as the flagship event on the European Tour.

History

Founded in 1955, this golf competition was originally known as the British PGA Championship. Since its inception, the tournament has been held at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England. The PGA European Tour uses this golf club as its headquarters. In 2017, this tournament joined with 7 others to create the Rolex Series, a group of tournaments played internationally as part of the European Tour.

Since then, there have been many changes to the Rolex Series. Eventually, it was whittled down to just 5 competitions, in which the BMW PGA Championship is included but was moved to September vs. its original May date. The others are:

  • Hero Dubai Desert Classic
  • Genesis Scottish Open
  • Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship
  • DP World Tour Championship

This Year’s Tournament

The 2024 BMW PGA Championship boasts a Par 72 course and stroke play-style tournament held September 19-22. Starting out with 144 professional golfers playing 72 holes, cuts are made after 36, with the top 65 players and ties moving on to the next round. With a purse of $9 million, the competition heated up quickly. However, there can only be one winner.

Congratulations to Keegan Bradley, who gets to take home $1.53 million of the total purse earnings.

EyePromise ambassador Padraig Harrington also competed over the weekend. While he didn’t get the results he’d hoped for, we are proud of his efforts on and off the course. Watch an interview where Padraig shares what it means to him to make the 14th cut, and we look forward to seeing him get back on the course.

Learn about Padraig’s successes.
